IMPORTANT!!!!
For the airport terminal to look right (i.e. turqoise instead of blue) you will need to install Kevin Trinkle's KT.pal color palette. Here are his instructions...

**********************************************************************
FSFS LIMITS:
For this airport, we have modified the palette to give proper coloration. The default FSFS palette is very limited and does not include certain colors, such as turqoise and purple.

To install this palette:
1. Rename and backup your current FS5.PAL (located in your \fs__\texture directory)
2. Copy KT_PALET.PAL into your \fs__\texture directory
3. Rename KT_PALET.PAL to FS5.PAL (for ALL versions of FS, 5.0 and up.)
4. Rename and backup your current FS5.HAZ (located with FS5.PAL)
5. Copy KT_PALET.HAZ into your \fs__\texture directory
6. Rename KT_PALET.HAZ to FS5.HAZ

To uninstall this palette:
1. Rename FS5.PAL in your \fs__\texture directory to KT_PALET.PAL
2. Rename FS5.HAZ in your \fs__\texture directory to KT_PALET.HAZ
3. Copy your backed-up FS5.PAL & FS5.HAZ (you DID back them up, didn't you?) to your
\fs__\texture directory. Make sure they are named FS5.PAL and FS5.HAZ respectively.

There have been changes to default building colors as a result - an example is in the
FS98 Las Vegas scenery, where the terminal building at McCarran becomes pink. Some of
the office buildings at Chicago reflect this too. The Microsoft Broadf.R8 texture
(broad leaves in fall) is also affected. These changes are a byproduct of the palette
change and cannot be overcome.

The pink/purple color sequence is copyrighted 1997 Kevin Trinkle. The revised blue color
scheme is copyrighted Carlos Coimbra, 1995. KT_PALET.PAL may not be sold on any CD or
disk. If you wish to use it in your aircraft, please contact me at trinkle@flash.net.

SCENERY INSTALLATION:

1. You will need to have the latest textures from Airport and VOD already installed. These are available from www.SurClaro

2. Unzip!

3. Create a new folder named "Atl1970s" within
your main Flight Simulator/Scenery folder. See folder diagram in number 7 below.

4. There should be two folders within your Atl1970s folder, named "Scenery" and "Texture". If they aren't there , create them.

5. All .bgl files should be in the /Atl1970s/Scenery folder.

6. All .pat and .af files should be in your /Atl1970s/Texture folder.

7. This is a diagram of how the folder structure for a default FS installation
looks:

C:Program Files
Microsoft Games
Flight Simulator
Scenery
Atl1970s
\Scenery\ ....all .bgl's go here
\Texture\ put .r8, .pat, & .*af files here

7. Now that you have all the files installed, start FS.

8. In the World pull-down menu, select Scenery Library.

9. Click OK to the warning.

10. Click the Files button, then the Add button.

11. In the first edit box, type the path that you have the *.bgl files
installed. Mine looks like:

It should look something like this:

c:\program files\microsoft games\flight simulator\scenery\atl1970s\scenery
\*.bgl

The " *.bgl " is important. The asterik tells FS to look for all the .bgl files at once.

You will know when you have the path right when the window changes
slightly in appearance. Now, type a title in the next edit box, such
as " Atlanta 1970s ".

12. Go the the lower left corner of the window and change the scenery from Global to Local.

13. Now, check the Active button. It should light up green.

14. Hit the OK button repeatedly until back into FS. The scenery is now installed, and you can go there using the World - Go to airport menu. Look up Atlanta and you're ready to fly!

BACKGROUND:
As a kid in the late seventies I always loved visiting the old terminal at the Atlanta airport. There was a terrific observation deck on the roof of concouse C , right in the middle of all the action . It was great for photography and watching planes and it was away from the crowds inside. My friends and I would pay our dime to go up on the roof and watch the great parade go by. The old terminal certainly had a lot more character than the current one and there was a lot more variety in airlines colors and types of aircraft. With deregulation, airlines such as Frontier, Ozark, and North Central began flying to Atlanta along with several international carriers. Air South DC-3s and Piedmont YS-11s would line up for takeoff between Sabena 747s, Eastern A300s and a purple or green Braniff 727. Exciting stuff for 12 year olds!

I've tried to recreate the airport as it looked around 1978-1980 . The terminal is very detailed although I had to leave out some of the jetways due to "bleed-through" problems. (Anyone know what to do about that?) Less than half of the gates had jetways back then anyway. I've also custom-made the newer midfield control tower and the maintenance bases of Delta , Eastern , and Southern. The area of the current terminal is shown as a construction site. Also, I've added Stone Mountain to the scenery and have removed a few of the newer buildings from downtown Atlanta.

The famous turqoise-green terminal opened in 1961 and closed in September 1980. It was demolished in 1984.

NAV , RADIO, ILS...

I didn't have information about the radio and nav frequencies in use during the 70s , so I've left the current ones in place. If you can help me out in this area, please contact me. davidstacy@prodigy.net

COMPATIBILITY and FRAME RATES:

I recommend turning of other sceneries when using this one. It was tested with a few others and occassionally a static plane or a building wouldn't appear. Frame rates are very good when scenery complexity is set at NORMAL, especially if you've gotten use to FS2000. In the the worst case I was getting frame rates around 6 to 9 with the scenery at VERY DENSE on my Pentium 2 366Hz.

CREDITS:

This scenery was created with Airport 2.10, VOD 3.0, M98toBGL, and Paint Shop Pro. Along with my personal collection of old photos and postcards , these two books were invaluable:

"A Dream Takes Flight-Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport" by Betsy Braden & Paul Hagan

"A Pictorial History of Airline Service at Atlanta" by George W. Cearley,Jr

Static aircraft are by the following:

1) Eastern 727-200 by Brian Quayle
2) Eastern DC-9-50 by Brian Quayle
3) Delta DC-9-32 by Guy Caron
4) Delta DC-8-61 by Guy Caron
5) Delta L-1011 by Christine Derkson
6) Piedmont 737 by John Keane and Brian Quayle
7) Southern DC-9 by B.Quayle,J.Keane,F. Zoja,Jason DeCesare
8) United B737 by Bill Alderson and Bruce Bridges
9) Florida Airlines DC-3 by Trev Morson
10) Zantop Convair 640 by Joe McNulty

Runway and taxiway signs by Michael Rodriguez

KNOWN PROBLEMS:
Despite my best efforts, you'll find the occasional plane or jetway bleeding through the terminal. The main tower also will have bleed problems when viewed from the air. Not a big deal , but a little annoying.
